If you had asked me a few years ago to describe my style I would have never said Garconne Fashion, instead I would have said something like this…
“ I don’t like to over complicate things, my style is Simple but classic and Glam”. So basic right?!! Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with basic! But even though that sounded good whenever I said it out loud, I knew it wasn’t a true representation of who I really was.
Ultimately, the clothes that we wear should be in harmony with who we are. They should tell a story about you with you saying one word. I discovered that I felt my best when wearing clothes that are both feminine and masculine! Insert the word that mostly describes this style here Garconne!
Now before I go into describing what Garconne Fashion is and how I interpret it in my style, I want to share with you how my style came to be and take a fashion journey. And if you would like to have a Garconne wardrobe but don’t know where to start read ” 10 Must Have Items For A Garconne Wardrobe” for some ideas!
Going Back In Fashion
Growing up, I was super competitive and loved playing sports! I didn’t mind getting dirty while chasing a soccer ball in the mud!! But I also liked to wear makeup and feel pretty in pink and I was obsessed with glitter! I was confused, thinking that I had to either be a girly girl or a tomboy. It was like picking between Baby Spice and Sporty Spice from the Spice Girls LOL.
As I continued to grow up and became more and more interested in Fashion, I would take tips from fashion magazines and bloggers. I bought the dresses they advertised, the tight skirt that was on trend, the low rise jeans that celebrities were wearing. I ended up with random clothes and a wardrobe that was not me! It wasn’t until I started my blog that I began to understand and see how other bloggers explained how important style was as opposed to “Fashion”.
It wasn’t until one day that I decided to google masculine and feminine look that I stumbled across the word La Garconne. Aha! I felt like I hit the jackpot when I finally found a word that described my style!
Garconne By Definition
The word Garconne goes back to the 1920s and in French means tomboy. It’s a young woman who rebelled against the conventional ideas of ladylike behavior and dress. Back then there were two kinds of defined styles for women: the flapper which embraced the feminine, feathered, sequins dress. This style liberated women from the tortures of corsets and allowed them to express their girlness. Then there was Garconne which was the total opposite style, defined as tomboyish since the clothes were more loose fitting. Some women who wore this style would even bandage their breasts to look less curvy. They would also wear trousers and suits.
With each style the women during this time made a bold statement by what they wore. I consider my style to be a mixture of both. I love to feel comfortable in a pair of trousers and a button down shirt but I also love to feel sexy in a bodysuit, skinny jeans and a red lip!
Garconne Fashion And My Style
Throughout the years, I have learned to dress for the person whose opinion matters the most….myself! And these are a few fashion rules I now live by. I refuse to wear shoes that hurt my feet! So long stilettos… I rather wear sneakers, mules or loafers. If I wear heels they must be a chunky heel and no bigger than 3 inches. I prefer solid colors over patterns and would pick a romper over a dress any day! I like high waisted jeans because they flatter my shape the most! My favorite thing to wear is a blazer because it makes me feel put together and in charge!
At every stage of my life I know my style might change and evolve but at the moment this is how I identify the most LA GARCONNE Fashion!
