I’m a jeans type of girl , I love how easy and versatile they can be. They are great for almost any occasion. Finding a good pair or pairs of jeans can be difficult if you don’t know what to look for. If you don’t feel confident and comfortable in your jeans, below are some tips to keep in mind for the next time you go shopping for your next pair!
- Buy according to your height, most brands carry tall and petite online. If you are in the store simply choose the size, style and wash of the jeans and have the sales person order your choice tailored to the length that is right for you.
- Buy jeans that flatter your body shape, here is what to look for…
Hour Glass: Have a smaller waist and full hips, choose a mid-rise denim with extra stretch! To avoid the dreaded gap at your waistline , look for contoured waistband. This means the band was cut at a curve not a straight line so that it will mimic your natural shape of your waist.
Pear Shape: You tend carry most of your weight on your lower half, hips, thighs and bottom. If this is you then choose a wide flare style of jeans. The extra width at the bottom will create balance, choose a mid-high rise and also a contoured waist band.
Heart Shape/apple/”Inverted triangle” have narrow hips, thinner legs and carry the weight in the mid-section. The best style of jeans is a mid-rise jeans sitting just below your belly button so that it will give some structure to the area. A waistline with a little more stretch will provide more comfort. A straight or boot cut will give your leg silhoutte more volume and balance out your torso.
Rectangle/Athletic have the flexibility to choose any style of jeans to play up you shape and create the illusion of curves. The best way to do this, is with a waistband that cuts across your hips. Fitted jeans around the thigh area with a slight flare at the bottom, will create volume and balance out the boxy silhouette.
3. Choosing the wash of the jeans. As with contouring in makeup, the same rule applies in jeans, the dark wash will give a slimmer illusion while white wash will highlight the area.
4. Pocket Placement is also very important! Pockets that are too big and far apart will not flatter your bum. Low placed pockets will make your legs look shorter. Make sure the back pockets are portioned to the size of your bottom.Pockets should be fairly centered on the fullest part of your cheeks to maintain good style proportion.
Lastly, when trying on jeans step outside of the fitting room and look at yourself in natural lighting, this will give you a better perspective on how your jeans will look IRL. To make sure the jeans you are trying on will be comfortable do a squat test to determine how much stretch the jeans provide. The stretch of the jeans is determined by the elastane (plastic) in them, to keep this your perfect pair of jeans for a long time DO NOT DRY THEM IN HIGH HEAT. Take care of them by washing them only when needed, turn them inside out to wash and hang them to dry.
